September 2000
Betsy Miller
In September and October the gallery will display the works of
up-and-coming artist Betsy Miller. During her high school tenure
she was a three year member of the National Art Honor Society and was also the recipient
of the prestigious Excel Award. Currently a junior at St. Olaf College, she holds
the Buntrock scholarship, which is the highest scholarship offered at the college.
Her work has been presented at several shows including the Lake Conference Art Exhibition,
the Congressional Art Exhibit, the Inter-Galactic Art Competition and the Carleton
College Homing Device Show. In addition, her work has been displayed at the
Governor's mansion in St. Paul. Betsy's artist statement speaks about her
maturation. "Growth is inevitable in our lives. We cannot control the
rising and setting of the sun. With each day that passes, we are one day older, one
day wiser. Growth can be upwards like swaying branches that reach toward the warmth
of the sun. Growth can be downwards like roots that push their way through the soil,
branching out and soaking up their environment. Growth can be forwards and
backwards...it can be culminating and enlightening. Growth and Process have become a
daily struggle and investigation in my life as an artist, sister, student, child, and
Christian.
