“To Gather”
The word conjures coffee shops, church basements, living rooms, ball fields, concert halls…. especially at this time of year. As the air chills and we seek comfort in a hearth, home cooking, family and friends… We celebrate, laugh, sing, turn to each other and count our blessings. So please join us at the Reif with humorist Kevin Kling, and the musical brilliance of Dan Chouinard and Simone Perrin as we raise the roof with stories and songs.
Dan Chouinard, For nearly four decades, has been pianist and accordionist of choice for performers in the Twin Cities area, an enabler of community singalongs and a writer of hit shows for public radio, concert hall and theater. His most recent theatrical collaboration, Rondo ’56: Remembering St. Paul’s Black Main Street, has played to sold-out houses since its premiere in 2021.
Dan attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and taught French and Italian at the University of Minnesota for four years. Beginning in 1994, his radio series The Singer’s Voice was broadcast live from the Dakota Jazz Club every week over six years.
He was a regular guest accompanist on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, and is the founder of a classic country band, Lush Country, comprised of Prairie Home Companion alumni. He currently accompanies Garrison Keillor on concerts around the U.S.
Kevin Kling, a renowned playwright and storyteller, is known for his commentaries on NPR’s All Things Considered and TPT’s Almanac. He entertains audiences with off-kilter stories full of humor, heart, and thoughtful philosophizing. Following a life-changing accident in 2001, Kevin continues to write plays and stories in a rigorous fashion, traveling the globe to theaters, storytelling festivals and residencies. He frequently performs at the acclaimed National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee. A prominent disability advocate, Kevin is especially proud of his collaboration with Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, a company of artists with varying abilities.
“Part funny guy, part poet and playwright, part wise man.” Krista Tippett, “On Being”, American Public Media.
Simone Perrin grew up on the banks of the upper Mississippi in beautiful Winona, MN. After studying at Oberlin College and Conservatory and then living and working in New York City, and then Minneapolis, where she met and started working with Kevin Kling, Simone moved rural Wisconsin, where she lives today with her family. She has appeared on the Prairie Home Companion and has performed with many regional theaters including The Guthrie, Theater Latte Da, Open Eye Figure Theatre, The Cincinnati Playhouse and The Seattle Repertory Theater, where she and Kevin developed two original plays, How? How? Why? Why? Why? and Breakin’ Hearts and Takin’ Names. In 2009, Simone released her first album Hummingbird, available to listen on most streaming platforms.

More than 200 shows a year. Jubilant fans who follow him from Minnesota to Mexico. More than 100,000 albums sold. A new release “Believe” and a state-of-the-art nightclub named after one of his songs -- all without the support of a major record label…
GB Leighton, a band named after one of the regions’ most incendiary live performers and consistently solid songwriters, Brian Leighton. Through almost three decades and fourteen albums, Leighton and his band have been tearing up rock clubs, festivals and even a few fan’s living rooms with a slew of songs that connect with the heart and couples singing along out on the dance floor. “A man of the people” is a phrase usually reserved for statesmen and politicians, but for Leighton, it’s a fitting description when you see him in action working a crowd.
Where have we seen this phenomena before? Springsteen in Asbury Park before he lit out for New York and the wider world; Mellencamp back in those anonymous Indiana bars; Leighton delivers that same inescapable rock ‘n’ roll spirit night after night. “If I hadn’t heard a bunch of Bruce’s bootlegs or seen the videos I’d be a much different musician,” he says today. “He’s always been a great songwriter and performer, like a preacher almost who commands an audience. That’s the place I’m coming from. But at the end of the day, I’m just a common guy, a working class kid from a Twin Cities suburb who loves to put on a good show and hopefully write some good songs in between.”
Leighton made his national country debut with “Get Up”, his eleventh album. For Leighton, who was also honored by Billboard.com as a Top 10 Country Artist to Watch as well. Leighton’s music has clearly left a lasting impression in the Midwest as fans have inked themselves with his lyrics.
“This is the only thing I ever wanted to do. I don’t see stopping or changing it up no matter where it takes me and the band.”

Originally hailing from Las Cruces, New Mexico, four-time Texas Female Vocalist of the Year Bri Bagwell fell in love with music at an early age. When she turned 18, she uprooted herself and moved to Austin, where she quickly learned the art of live performance in many of the city’s clubs, winning over one live audience at a time. After graduating from the University of Texas, she released her debut record Banned from Santa Fe in 2011. In 2013 she released an EP of demos that she recorded during her time in Nashville and followed up with 2015’s full-length record When a Heart Breaks. In 2018, she stunned us again with the release of In My Defense, a collection of ten carefully crafted songs that give her fans an inside peek of how this girl chasing a dream for over fifteen years, has blossomed into the woman living those dreams. Her albums impressively showcase her songwriting talents, but more impressive is her grueling tour schedule boasting over 150 shows per year.

Hailing from Kennett, Missouri, David Nail is well-respected up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a “tour de force” as his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. The GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer/songwriter’s early releases, I’m About To Come Alive, The Sound Of A Million Dreams, I’m A Fire and Fighter, ignited his reputation as an innovator and creative risk-taker yet left Nail feeling restless. This led to the departure of the only record company home he’d ever known, MCA Nashville, where he’d formed friendships that endure even now. Through dealing with his own journey of mental health and the feeling of needing to “rebel against what people expect you to be,” Nail began making his most “organic” work to date, David Nail & The Well Ravens, with Jason Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him into his next adventure. Writing solo for the next few months led to his debut solo independent EP Oh, Mother, a reflective piece of work. Of the title track, Rolling Stone noted that “the song creeps in like a sunrise — quiet, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail’s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more massive and majestic.” That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and Bootheel 2021, projects dedicated to the singer/songwriter’s hometown in the “bootheel” of Missouri. Nail released an EP titled Best of Me in 2023 and the title track has seen heavy press support and country radio airplay. 2024 brought more touring than ever, two great single releases “If I Could Call” and “Why” featuring Aubrie Sellers. Nail plans on releasing the start of an excitingly different and elevated album project this year leaving behind any self-imposed restrictions. In Nail’s own words, “My philosophy has always been, I just hope to have a good enough year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.” Find more at www.davidnail.com.
