Modern dance originated from ballet technique but differs drastically from the classical style in many ways. Modern at its conception broke the rules of classical ballet, while using some of its technique to go against the restrictions of classical ballet to further the expressive nature of dance. Modern dance contains five basic components: contract and release, fall and recovery, lateral tilt, isolations, and floorwork. However, Modern is not limited to specifics and has a much more organic and grounded composition, with classes also exploring the art of improvisation. Modern requires the same athleticism as all other styles of dance and encourages artistic individualism.
